SAN DIEGO – Calif. With their first clean sheet of the season, the Albion SC PROS dominated the top-ranked Riverside Coras 3-0 at home on May 20.
The PROS handed the Coras their first loss of the season and are within striking distance of third place Orange County FC in NPSL Southwest Conference standings.
“We had numerous opportunities at goal. We were very disciplined. We didn’t give much away, and guys were tremendous all throughout … they were fantastic tonight,” said Head Coach Ziggy Korytoski.
The PROS defense started strong in minute 7 with a save by keeper Jean Antoine. Then again in minute 15 as Nano Pereira deflected the ball, forcing play in the opposite direction well before it reached Antoine. “We’ve been working a lot on our defensive shape and good to see it paid off,” said Man of the Match Sean Callahan.
After a shot by Luan Oliveira tipped wide right and the Coras keeper punched out a corner kick attempt, the score remained locked 0-0 until after minute 30.
In minute 33, Amani Walker scored an unassisted goal. Walker, the Week 9 Mitre USA National Player of the Week, now has five goals in the last four games.
More defensive action from the PROS continued in minute 35, as Travis Nicklaw headed the ball and successfully deflected a Coras free kick attempt.
At the opening of the second half, the PROS led 1-0 and the game became increasingly physical with multiple yellow cards being handed to Coras.
In minute 54, the Coras had a chance to score off a corner kick but did not capitalize.
Three minutes later, defender Frankie Sanfilippo scored off a corner kick, and the PROS increased their lead to 2-0.
The last score of the night came in minute 87 when Tre Hayes worked his way through tight space, finding the back of the net. The goal, assisted by Felipe Liborio brought the score to 3-0 as time expired.
The PROS next match is Saturday, June 3 on the road against City of Angels FC.
“We’re excited for the runout. Six games to go, but one game at a time,” said Korytoski.
